By Angela Agyeiwaa Darkwah
Justice Ivy Kamanga is a household name in Malawi as a member of the Judiciary. Having chaired the Women Judges Association in Malawi, she was also promoted by the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, to the Supreme Court in 2020. Due to her professional excellence and hard work, Justice Kamanga has sat on numerous high-profile cases in Malawi. Most notably, she and five other Constitutional Court judges nullified the results of Malawi's 2019 elections due to mass irregularities and ordered the preparation for a new election. Justice Kamanga was also hailed for sentencing a 30-year-old man who defiled a 10-year-old girl to life imprisonment.
In 2020, Justice Kamanga and the four other judges were awarded the Chatham House Prize, an annual award that is given to individuals and organizations who have contributed immensely to the improvement of international relations in the previous year. They were honored for their unabashed upholding of the Malawi Constitution and the defense of democratic rights despite threats and bribery.
